Transcript of the Talk on Reincarnation Study Unit - Part III
I have mentioned that the talents we learn in each life are stored in the soul, in the causal body, but don’t expect that because you were a brilliant musician, you will be it again this time. You might not be able to touch any musical instrument. You may have been a mathematician of the most brilliant genius on this Earth, and you know nothing about mathematics, it’s like Greek to you – as it was to me actually this lifetime, completely. It is on purpose because I have been thinking like this: I have wanted so dearly to play piano but I didn’t practice as a child, and I didn’t learn, and later on I discovered why. If I had made it at the piano, I would never have been standing here today teaching you about reincarnation, because I prefer to play the piano than do what I’m doing today. In this way, you haven’t got to teach people some things they don’t want to hear, which makes for a very unchallenging life because I would have wanted to play eight/ ten hours a day, enter the world of music and forget everything in there; work with the devas creating beautiful improvised music. But I would never have done what I had to do. Think about it. Many of you have this deep wish ‘I wanted to learn to play the piano, but I never got there’ or you wanted to be an actor, but you never got there. Then think: if you had got there, would you have been sitting here today? Would you have that kind of life you have today? Would you have lived out your pattern?
I find you have to find your pattern in this life as quickly as possible, to find your mission and your pattern. When you find that, you understand yourself much better and there are no regrets. What you wanted to learn and you haven't learned; what you wanted to do and you haven't done – you were never supposed to, and when you see that, you will find it much easier to live.
Then there is another question: ‘How long a time is there between incarnations?’ There is no time. You can incarnate the moment you pass away, you can enter a new body. You can on the inner levels remain five, ten, twenty years – six thousand years. It all depends if you are a lower developed soul or a higher developed soul. If you are a higher developed soul, you incarnate quickly to speed up development. If you are a lower developed soul, very slowly.
So, if you have 3,000 incarnations, the first 1,500 have given you long moments of rest on the inner levels, but for the last 1,500 you’ve incarnated at a more and more rapid speed, even in the last 300 years or 500 years, having one incarnation after the other and the soul having more than one at the same time. It creates conflict when you understand that you are sitting here, but you start remembering that you are also sitting in England during this, being 65 years old. It creates conflict when you discover that someone – you just passed away but you are sitting here, but you know you just passed away. And that is another life.
The quicker you accept that it is your soul that stores the knowledge, that you are just living for the soul, your personality is just a living thing experiencing for the soul, working for the soul; the quicker you realise that, the easier you will find your incarnations, and [understand] that you are experiencing by learning, by incarnating in different countries now, at the same time. Perhaps what you wanted to do, someone else of your personalities is doing. Perhaps if you wanted to play the piano, another personality is doing just that on Earth, succeeding.
Then we have another question: ‘Where are we between physical lives?’ Where do you think we are? What is it that dies first? The physical body dies, the etheric leaves and is quickly deteriorating three days after, in most cases. You are living in your astral body, later in your mental – all depending. Now where do you live? In theosophical language it is called, under one expression, the devachan – the inner levels – not to be mistaken with ‘devas’ which means ‘angelic beings’, even though the word must have come from an angelic existence of some kind.
The devachan is the place you live in-between physical life, and it could be the astral level, one of them – seven of them we have. It could be one of the seven mental or numerous soul levels. You live there in-between life and it is a beautiful existence. And I will try to get you back to it today, so you can see the difference between your devachan existence and Earth existence, because what you are longing for deep, deep within is that – home.
Where is home? It’s not Caulfield. It’s not Melbourne. It’s not Iceland. It is devachan – that’s your home. And when you are crying and longing for home and your spiritual family, that’s it. That’s what you are crying for. Deep, deep within, you don’t lose that consciousness that you come from somewhere else, and you feel like a stranger to this Earth, you feel you don’t belong here and sometimes you are very lonely. When you sleep at night, you go there, but when you don’t, you are here. And what we have to do in the New Age is we have to create that existence on Earth. We have to create the Kingdom of God on Earth. And there is a way to do it, and then everyone will feel at home on Earth. We’ll not any more long for anything.
I would like to give you a key word or a key sentence to understand life and to love life. It is:
‘Look at resistance in life as the great developer.’
Resistance – look at resistance in life as your great developer. Then you won’t complain so much.
Also, the sentences that I will say now are to gain inner strength and courage for life.
‘Look upon the good values in life, and regain the faith and the confidence that you have had in other lives before this one.’
‘There are values in life which are worth fighting for, in spite of a growing feeling of hopelessness and despair on Earth amongst humanity.’
Many people on this Earth have resigned themselves to the fact that life is awful and nothing can be done about it. And you could say from looking at people’s lives, patterns, there might be something in it. But nevertheless, spiritual people who have an understanding of the Divine Law have to think differently. When a child is a child, much is forgiven them, but when you are an adult, a grown-up human being, you cannot do the same things as the children and get away with it. And that is why spiritual people, who are considered to be more adult than other people with the knowledge they have, must not resign themselves to any fact that Earth is awful, life is terrible, because you are creating such a life. The karma will be that you will get what you say. What I am trying to get people to look at is the good things in life which they tend to forget, and look at what happens in life as steps of learning.
Spiritual people are very ambitious. They want – they have also a great curiosity, that is why we delve into the inner levels of Earth. We want to know what’s there. We are curious. We are curious about our past lives, sometimes unhealthily so. We are governed very much by ambitions. We don’t let go of ambitions because we become spiritual people, but when we are initiates, we let go of ambitions and then we really will experience what we couldn’t experience before. Difficult to explain these things to people. If you know them, that will help you.
Also, there is on this Earth something called spiritual competition. We compete. We are taught to be competitive in life and we are all competing with each other. How many lives do we remember? How many strong personalities have we had? Have I had two more than you’ve had? – and so forth. And when we lose all that, we will find ourselves to become quite happy and to get much more out of life, and that is something I would like you to experience: to lose ambitions where they are not needed and to lose your competitive need to be more than other people, because it is when you become one with the group that you become somebody. That is the paradox. As long as you feel that you separately are a great personality, greater than everyone else, you will be separated from humanity. But when you feel one with the group, one with man, you then will feel that you are somebody, that you are becoming divine.
There is therefore a great difference between spirituality and divinity. We strive to be spiritual people. When we are divine, we are soul. We know what we are; there is no competition anymore, no ambitions, nothing. We just know from within what we are, and we can then bring to Earth, the Kingdom of God. On the inner levels, we know what we are. As soon as you pass away from your physical body, you realise exactly what you are. Some people don’t like it of course, their astral bodies cry. Nevertheless, you know what you are.
On Earth, you imagine yourself to be something you’re not and when you become divine, you will know exactly what you are and be happy about it. Take the time it takes to become perfect and live on Earth, as we live on the inner levels, in peace.
